How do you organize HTML files?

Displaying files in a folder in html

Regardless of personal preferences, the ways in which a website can be organized strongly depend on its type and scope. In this tutorial we will look at some models that can help you organize your website files and make updating them a pleasant job.

As you can see, the directory structure consists of a main or root directory that contains a sub-directory called “images”. In this organizational model you put all your artwork in the “images” directory and all documents in the “root”.

In this scenario, a viable solution could be to divide your images into thematic groups: “flowers”, “people”, “animals”, “fantasy” and “surrealism”. This way you can display all the images corresponding to a category on a single page, having one page for each category. Let’s see what this looks like.

Now, pay attention to the “artists” folder. This is an addition that provides organization and expansion possibilities, making the structure more flexible to the inclusion of new artists. And the “index.html” file inside the “artists” folder contains a document showing all the artists present on the site. Placing this file there is appropriate in a sense of ownership: it is the list of artists; it should be present in the “artists” directory.

In Linux and Unix everything is a file. Directories are files, files are files, and devices are files. Devices are sometimes called nodes, but they are still files.

Linux and Unix file systems are organized in a hierarchical, tree-like structure. The top level of the file system is the / or root directory. All other files and directories are under the root directory. For example, /home/jebediah/cheeses.odt shows the full path to the cheeses.odt file that is in the jebediah directory, which in turn is under the home directory, which in turn is under the root directory (/).

To sort files differently, click on one of the column headers in the file manager. For example, click on Type to sort by file type. Click on the column header again to sort in reverse order.

In the list view, you can display the columns with the most attributes and sort by these columns. Click on the view options button in the toolbar, choose Visible columns… and select the columns you want to make visible. You can then sort by these columns. See the Column preferences section in the file list for descriptions of the available columns.

Basic parts of a documentWeb pages can and should be differentiated from one another, but they all tend to contain similar common elements, unless they are intended to show a video or a game in full screen, or are part of a particular art project, or are simply poorly structured; these common elements are:

Usually consisting of a large strip across the top of the page with a large title, a logo and perhaps a tagline. This part usually remains unchanged as you navigate between pages of the same website.

It is the big central part of the page and contains most of the particular content of a particular web page; for example, the video you want to watch, the narration you want to read, the map you want to consult, the news headlines, etc. This is the part that should definitely vary a lot from page to page of your website!

Blind and visually impaired people represent about 4-5% of the world’s population (in 2012 there were 285 million visually impaired people with one of these characteristics in the world, while the total population was around 7 billion.
