Anime expo 2022

Anime conventions outside of Japan began in the 1980s within multi-genre conventions and science fiction conventions, where anime had a limited place. Although many Japanese programs that were broadcast were very popular, the direct penetration of the anime video market in North America and Europe came in the late 1980s. From that time on, anime conventions in North America and Europe took on some characteristics of conventions in Japan such as using a large hotel with a meeting hall, spanning one or two days, more within a weekend, inviting members of the video industry, alternative fashion and cosplay, merchants selling various merchandise and others enjoying the event.

Occasionally at these events there is a guest list as part of the program. Thus, a guest may be a member of the industry, a talent (such as a cartoonist, voice actor, actor, etc.) or even a figure within the fan community. An anime convention represents an opportunity to interact with these guests in a way that is not possible outside of the event.

From its humble origins as an unofficial gathering of comic book fans organized in 1970, attended by just 100 participants, Comic-Con has grown to become one of pop culture’s biggest shows. It now draws more than 130,000 eclectic attendees – game fans, anime devotees and fantasy fanatics – to the San Diego Convention Center for four days of workshops, screenings and previews of future blockbusters. Comic books continue to play an important role, but attendees can also participate in talks with A-list stars such as Matthew McConaughey and Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as cast members from shows like HBO’s Game of Thrones. In addition to what is presented on stage, there is another side show throughout the convention center, with attendees dressing up in elaborate costumes representing their favorite characters.
