In 1904, the destinies of the two crossed and the passion for nuts was transformed into the legendary Rolls-Royce Limited brand. The firm, which for more than a century has been synonymous with quality, luxury and power, in 2015 sold 3,785 units, achieving US$ 20,976 million in revenues and an Ebitda of US$ 3,280 million.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited – as it is called today – literally departed from one moment to the next. On May 4, 1904, in Manchester, Rolls met Royce and the car he had built. Impressed, he offered to sell all the models he made, but with the same quality of his first piece. The brand was profiled from the first minute as niche, where exclusivity, quality and luxury were the comparative advantages. This implied diffusion and that task fell at the beginning to Claude Johnson, author of its most remembered slogan: ‘The Rolls-Royce six-cylinder is not one of the best, but the best car in the world’.

Royce’s obsession for perfection in every detail of its cars was what finally defined the starting point for the company’s production chain and its exclusive distribution, laying the foundations for the commercial focus that the founders set for themselves and that the brand maintains to this day.

With a shared ambition to make the future of the automobile extraordinary, the Honorable Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce joined forces in 1904 to create the iconic Rolls-Royce automobile brand.

Despite being from very different backgrounds, the founders of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars formed an unlikely partnership: Henry Royce, a successful engineer, and Charles Rolls, owner of one of the UK’s first car dealerships, agreed to sell cars under the Rolls-Royce name.

Born in 1877 in London, Charles Stewart Rolls was a prestigious mechanical engineering student at Cambridge, while also being the first university student to own an automobile. Having gained a reputation for tinkering with engines, Rolls earned the nicknames “Dirty Rolls” and “Petrolls.”

By the time he left college, Rolls was already an accomplished driver. In 1903, he broke the world land speed record in Dublin driving a 30 hp Mors at nearly 135 km/h. But because the timing equipment was not approved, the governing body refused to recognize his achievement.

Requirements for buying a Rolls-Royce

Charles Stewart Rolls (1877-1910) was born in Hill Street, Mayfair, a stone’s throw from Berkeley Square, west London. After attending Eton College and Cambridge University, where he studied engineering, he opted for a career as a car dealer and opened his first dealership with a £6600 loan from his father. CS Rolls & Co, began importing French Peugeot and Belgian-made Minerva vehicles, but it wasn’t long before he wanted a car that was a little more luxurious to sell to his wealthy customers.

During this famous meeting, Rolls agreed to buy all the cars Royce could make. Later cars would carry the Rolls-Royce badge and would be sold exclusively through CS Rolls & Co in Fulham. The first Rolls-Royce badged car, the 10 hp Rolls-Royce, appeared at the Paris Motor Show in December 1904.

Rolls-Royces had earned a reputation for smoothness and reliability, crucial at a time when most motor vehicles were crudely built and notoriously unreliable. In 1906 Rolls went to the U.S., where he intended to capitalize on the company’s reputation and established a dealership for his automobiles in New York. Despite the company’s initial success, it was clear that Rolls’ interest in the business was waning. His head had changed to a new invention, the airplane, and he was one of the first purchasers of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s new airplane, the Wright Flyer, in 1909. Rolls set several early aviation records, including the first non-stop double crossing of the English Channel in 1909.
