The OEM licensing model has changed since Windows 8. If you buy a computer preinstalled with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, you will no longer see a label on the back or top of the machine with the 5 × 5 product key printed on it. Instead, there is only a label with the official Windows 8.1 / 10 logo. That’s it.

The key is now embedded in BIOS and can be retrieved automatically during the activation process in Windows 8/10. Theoretically, you will never be asked for a key to activate your machine. But for the process to run smoothly, you will need the proper Windows 8/10 installation media that matches the one stored in BIOS. Or you will be prompted to enter the correct product key.

NirSoft’s ProduKey is your friend. It is a free portable tool that reveals the keys not only to your installed Windows operating system, but also to other installed software, such as MS Office.

There is a simple way you can use to retrieve the embedded product key information directly from a command line. Open a command prompt window and run the following command:

There is also the possibility that none of the above options are available. This is when the ideal thing to do is to install third-party applications that seek to recover Microsoft license. This option is only valid if we can boot our computer. In this way, the most practical thing to do would be to collect this data in case we need it in the future and save it along with the backups.

All these programs work in a similar way. First, you run the application, most of them do not even need to be installed, and it informs you of the OS and program licenses it allows you to recover.

If an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) version of your Windows 7 (or earlier) computer came pre-installed, your product key should be available on a label on the back of your computer or inside where you plug in the battery. For Windows 8 and 10, the product keys and OEM license model have changed. If you purchase a PC with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 pre-installed, you will not see a label on the back or top of the machine that has a product key printed on it. For OEM Windows 8 and 10, the genuine product key is built into the computer’s BIOS. If you purchased your version of Windows from a retail store, then the product key should be on a label inside or on top of the product cover.
