Shortly after we moved to live in a former Anglican rectory in a quietly anonymous village in Norfolk, I found sufficient reason to go up to the attic to investigate the source of a slow but mysterious drip. As there was no ladder in our house leading up to the loft, to access it there was no choice but to resort to a tall stepladder and wiggle unseemly through a porthole opening in the roof, which is why I had not yet climbed up there (nor have I done so with much enthusiasm since).

We are so used to comforts – to being clean, warm and well-fed – that we forget how recent these are for the most part. In fact, it took us forever to get these things, and then they came to us almost all at once. How this happened, when it happened, and why it took so long to get it is what the following pages attempt to explain.Although I have not identified the town where the rectory is located, I want to emphasize that the house is real, just as the people mentioned in connection with it are real (or were). I also want to point out that the paragraphs in chapter one that refer to the Reverend Thomas Bayes appeared somewhat differently in the introduction I wrote for Seeing Further: The Story of Science and the Royal Society.

RMS Titanic[note 1] was a British ocean liner, the largest passenger ship in the world at the completion of her construction, which sank during the night of April 14 and early morning of April 15, 1912 during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. In the sinking of the Titanic, 1496 of the 2208 people on board died, making this catastrophe one of the largest peacetime shipwrecks in history.

In 1907, Joseph Bruce Ismay, president of the White Star Line shipping company, and Lord William Pirrie, president of the Harland & Wolff shipyard, decided to build a trio of large ocean liners to compete with the new ships of the rival Cunard Line. These ships, christened Lusitania and Mauretania, had become the largest, most luxurious and fastest ocean liners in the world, winning at certain points in their careers the Blue Sash, the award for the fastest crossing.
