What is the difference between compound and complex sentences?

1

A compound sentence is one that has more than one verb or verbal periphrasis in its structure and, therefore, more than one predicate. In other words, it consists of the union of two or more sentences within the same statement.  This union can be made by different processes, which are what determine the type of compound sentence.

On the other hand, we have subordinate clauses, where one sentence depends on the other (Marta has a parrot that talks like a person). Within this group we can find subdivisions, such as noun, adjective or adverbial sentences.

The term “compound sentence” has been subject to different inaccuracies. Traditionally, it has been considered to encompass the types of sentences mentioned above. However, some grammars exclude subordinate clauses to cover them under the term “complex sentence”.

Coordinated sentences are those that are connected by a conjunction (and, e, o, u, but, but, but, but, withthat, although…). Coordinated sentences are also related by meaning.

Complex compound sentences in English examples

However, for some grammarians the compound sentence is opposed to the simple sentence and covers both complex sentences and sentence sets, while for others the compound sentence covers only sentence coordination, that is, what is here called sentence set by coordination, and keeps the term complex sentence for all other cases in which there is more than one predicate. (…)

This classification made by Leonardo Gómez Torrego is, in my opinion, the one most commonly used nowadays and it is the one we are going to follow, with the difference that we will use the term compound sentence as a synonym of orational set. In short, the definitions would be as follows:
